Watched the Olympics opening ceremony last night - I've never watched one before, but being British I figured I probably should. :) Anyway, I may be biased but I really enjoyed it. The bit with the Queen and James Bond was really fun and I never knew the guy who invented the World Wide Web was a Brit - good for him! And I loved what they did with the flame - the many trumpet-things coming together to form one huge torch.

I can still remember how excited everyone was seven years ago when we found out we were getting the Olympics, even if the news did come the day before a terrorist attack. Only city in the world to host the Olympics three times, I think that's pretty cool. (But then I don't actually live in London, so I don't have to deal with the downsides.) Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

On a totally different note, I'm currently working on a K/S genderswap AU and I wondered if anyone would be willing to look it over when it's finished? It's my version of how "Turnabout Intruder" would have gone if Kirk and Spock were both women. (I'm currently at the "You know his her thoughts" part and having lots of fun.) Thanks!

There are people (possibly just one person) roleplaying in my reviews over at ff.net. I am much amused.

(Here, if you're interested. Start from the bottom.)

Okay, I just want to try a little experiment here.

Picture the scene. A charming, attractive human is very close to a dark-haired, dark eyed half-alien (one human parent and one parent from a telepathic race). They serve together on a ship called the Enterprise, where the half-alien's mental powers often help save the day. The alien is heir to an important family, and while they love their non-human parent, they don't always get along with them. In addition, the human and the alien have a special word to describe their relationship that they only use with each other.

Now, am I describing TNG or TOS?

(I also found this, which I think makes my point.)

I'm not sure what it says about me that I just stumbled across a fic about Kirk being forced to talk like a LOLCat and the part that made me backbutton was that it was Kirk/McCoy.

Hey, guess what I’ve been doing!

As you can see, I won NaNoWriMo!

If you don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, the website is here. But put simply, it’s a challenge to write 50,000 words during the 30 days of November. And I did it in 26 days! (Admittedly the challenge was set up for original novels, but it says in their FAQ that fanfiction is totally fine, so I don't really care.) I feel pretty accomplished, given it took more than twice that to write the 33,000 words of Hearts and Minds.

Which, speaking of... the project I was (and am) working on is actually the sequel to Hearts and Minds. I got kind of blocked on it, and almost gave up, but then I thought, “Hey, maybe I could use this challenge to motivate myself.” And I think it worked. It’s still going to be a while though – I’m nowhere near finished, and I need to go back and sort through the stuff I’ve already written, and probably add in some of the stuff I wrote prior to starting the challenge.

NaNoWriMo very much values length over coherency, so the 50,000 words I’ve written will probably be a lot less than that once I’ve finished taking out the stuff that doesn’t make sense. (At the moment at least half of the fic can be summed up as, “Kirk is ill and Spock is worried, and sometimes McCoy is worried as well,” so it’ll definitely have to be cut down a bit.)

But anyway, I thought you might be interested in how it’s going, so here’s a quick snippet of Spock being worried. (I can’t guarantee that this’ll actually be in the final story – like I said, I really need to go through and edit it.)
