Spock knows that it is impossible for his blood to be on fire, but that is how it feels. The fever burns through his veins, stealing his control as it goes. He hoped to be spared this, but it is not to be. He has tried to ignore it, tried to meditate his way through the pain and fever, but to no avail.

His mind again runs through the limited options available to him. They are too far from New Vulcan to make it there in time. There are no other Vulcans on board, and no one else would be skilled enough to prevent an unwanted bond. He knows Nyota would willingly go through this with him, if only to save his life, but he cannot rob her of the chance to find someone who will love her as she deserves. And then his thoughts turn, as they always do, to Jim, and even the mere thought is enough to feed the fire in his veins.

Jim would do anything for him, Spock knows, and that is why he cannot ask this of his friend. He has waited for so long, quietly hoping that Jim would come to reciprocate his feelings, but he does not want it to happen like this. Not as an act of necessity, because there is no other option. No, Jim must never know about any of this.

With a deep breath, Spock closes his eyes and tries, once more, to calm the burning inside him.

Poor Spock! The meditation will surely fail, as it did in TOS. Hopefully Jim's already in love with him!

I couldn't help but feel sad at the end. I have a feeling Spock doesn't make it, but I truly hope I'm wrong. It shows an author's talent when he or she can tell an emotional and detailed story with only a few hundred words.
