Beginning's End

Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Pairing: Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Spock, implied Kirk Prime/Spock Prime
Rating: PG
Summary: Uhura notices the growing bond between Kirk and Spock and comes to a decision.
Notes: This is actually a sort of outtake from a much longer fic that I'm working on, but it demanded to be written. I have to say, I feel a little sorry for Uhura - I mean finding out your boyfriend has this Epic Destiny with someone else has got to suck.
Words: ~700

She isn’t sure when she first begins to question it. Perhaps as early as Spock’s return to the Enterprise, when he refuses to tell her what has changed his mind, perhaps later on. But eventually she begins to notice that their looks last just a fraction too long, or that the captain touches him just a little too often. She tries to put it out of her mind, nothing in their relationship has changed, but she can’t help but look at him sometimes and wonder.

She really begins to suspect something about six months after Kirk becomes captain. Spock is hurt during a mission – badly enough to require several days in sickbay. That he was injured is not unusual, although the severity of his injury is, and she is greatly relieved to learn that he will fully recover. The part that makes her pause, though, is how he became injured.

As she sits by his bedside, she is approached by the captain. “He saved my life,” Kirk tells her. She learns that Spock had jumped in front of Kirk without a thought. She’s sure he’d tell her it was a perfectly logical decision, a first officer protecting his captain, but she can’t help but think there’s another explanation. She never asks him about it, and he never brings it up.

By the time she meets the elder Spock she is already thinking of ending their relationship. But she thinks even if she hadn’t been, meeting him might have changed her mind. She can see it in his eyes that this elderly Vulcan really is Spock, but he’s not her Spock. He greets her as a colleague, a friend, but not a lover. She watches him interact with the crew and notices that he treats the rest of them the same way. All but one.

Her Spock looks at Kirk like he is a puzzle to be solved. This Spock looks at Kirk like… like he is the most precious thing in the universe. It isn’t hard to put two and two together, although neither Kirk nor the younger Spock seem to notice. She thinks that if she hadn’t already been having doubts she could have brushed it off; the whole universe has changed. Just because it happened that way there doesn’t mean it’ll happen here. But by this point all the knowledge does is cement her conviction that Spock isn’t really hers; perhaps never has been. It almost feels like the two of them are destined to be together, and the universe doesn’t seem to care that she’s standing in the way.

In the end it doesn’t hurt as much as she thought it would. She asks him one night whether he loves her. He responds that he is a Vulcan, which gives her an answer, even if it wasn’t the one she was looking for. Willing her voice to stay level, she asks him about Kirk. He reacts with confusion, insisting that he doesn’t have any feelings for the captain, but there is something in his eyes that tells her he isn’t as certain as he makes out. She ends their relationship then, and advises him to figure it out.

Kirk seeks her out the next day and asks why she broke up with Spock. His concern for the Vulcan is obvious, although he seems completely oblivious to the idea that Spock might have feelings for him. She tells him that it just didn’t work out, and hopes that the two of them will eventually stop being such idiots about it all.

Spock comes up to her a few days later and admits that she was right. She is surprised that the knowledge still stings a little; thinking something and knowing it for certain are two different things. But she watches him interact with the captain and knows that she has done the right thing; they seem happy. And it’s not as hard as she expected to be happy for them, although she does get a certain pleasure out of warning Kirk what she’ll do to him if he breaks Spock’s heart.

And a few months later, when a blushing Montgomery Scott asks her to dinner, she thinks that maybe it’s not so bad to let destiny win.

Aww! I don't know why the thought of her meeting Spock Prime and figuring it out from there had not ever occurred. This was quite nice. :) And yay, Uhura/Scotty!

This was so beautiful. I love how Spock Prime looks at Kirk - it was a very nice touch.

Thanks! Yeah, I felt the same way - I like Uhura, I just don't ship her with Spock.

Aw, these kinds of stories are always a little sad, but I love how Uhura accepts destiny for Kirk and Spock without realizing Scotty is her destiny♥

In the many ways in which Spock and Uhura have broken up via fic, this is the most impressive way I've read yet. The simplicity of seeing Uhura apply deductive skills to the situation, figuring it out before even Kirk and Spock do retains all of the intelligence and wisdom I enjoy in her character, without the fallecies the new movie introduced.

Seems like it would be a pretty short film...
