Jim Kirk has never believed in destiny.

He and Spock have been together for a few months when the Enterprise is sent on a mission to New Vulcan. Jim has to practically drag Spock to see the elder Spock. His Spock stands impassive as Jim stumbles through an explanation of their relationship, but the other Spock merely smiles. In retrospect, learning that their counterparts shared a similar relationship should not come as a surprise; after all, they are fundamentally the same people. But it is a surprise, because they’re not. That was a world where the Federation wasn't crippled by the loss of one of its founding planets, where neither he nor Spock lost parents to Nero, where they didn't start out hating each other. The entire universe has changed around them, and yet…. And yet they’re still hanging on. Together.

It’s almost enough to make him believe in destiny.
